As the brisk autumn air sets in, apples are taking the spotlight in the culinary scene. The annual Great Apple Crunch event is upon us, and this year, it's all thanks to our fruitful partnership with Apple Blossom Orchard.
Nestled a short drive north of Appleton in the charming town of Black Creek, Apple Blossom Orchard has been our go-to source for apples for the second year running. Todd Hanson, the orchard's president, recently shared his knowledge and passion for apples with our students, adding a practical touch to our partnership.
Our collaboration with this local gem extends far beyond taste. We've been seamlessly incorporating their delectable apples into our school programs, including the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP). Thanks to the support from NSLP and FFVP funds, we've been able to diversify our apple selection, ensuring our students have access to the finest nature has to offer.
Our selection of apples isn't your run-of-the-mill variety. We've been treating our young food enthusiasts to a cornucopia of flavors, including Honeycrisp, McIntosh, Red Free, Paula Red, Cortland, Spartan, Gala, Cameo, Jonagold, and possibly more, depending on the season.
The apple variety we receive changes from month to month, ensuring we always have the freshest and most enticing options for our students. At present, it's McIntosh apples taking center stage in our cafeterias, adding a satisfying crunch to our October menus. Looking ahead, the orchard predicts that November will bring us the tantalizing and vibrant taste of Cortland apples in our school lunches.
But our partnership with Apple Blossom Orchard isn't just about the apples; it's about strengthening our community ties. By supporting local businesses, we not only encourage healthy eating habits among our students but also contribute to the prosperity of our region.
